GARDEN & CABIN: Henrik's Garden, located on Skåldö island in the Ekenäs archipelago about 100 km west of Helsinki, is a small organic demonstration and market garden with a wide variety of vegetables, perennials, ornamental trees and shrubs, fruit trees, berry bushes, and annual flowers. Many plants are traditional varieties. The size of the farm is just over 1 hectare. The garden is situated 500 m from the seashore in a landscape of forested hills, meadows, forest ponds and small fields, an environment which is ideal for outings year-round. The island has a year round population of only about 250, many of whom live from traditional farming and fishing. Guided tours of the garden and environment can be arranged, and visitors are welcome to help out in the garden.

Visitors are lodged in Niilo's cabin next to the park-like garden. The small modest cabin has a bunk bed for two people, a cooking area with a stove and refrigerator, and a shower. The toilet is an outhouse.

The price includes one free dinner per visit. The dinner is made from the garden's produce and other organic and local products. Local fish, fish products, bread and eggs can be purchased nearby. Smoking is prohibited both indoors and outdoors.

ENVIRONMENT AND ACTIVITIES: Ekenäs National Park, with guided tours available, is a 3 km boat ride away. Bicycles and canoes may be rented nearby, and a riding stable is 3 km away (prearrangements necessary for riding). A traditional outdoor dance is held at Sommarö village on the last Saturday of August. The Ekenäs Fair is held around September 20th.

DIRECTIONS: Public transport: Henrik's Garden is located 17 km from Ekenäs train station. Sommarö bus stop is 760 m from the garden. A minibus goes from Ekenäs to Sommarö on weekdays at 14:00 during the school year. Guests can also be picked up from Ekenäs by car.

Cars/bicycles: From Ekenäs along Baggövägen 12 km south (ferry crossing about half way), then turn right (to the west) onto Skåldövägen, continue for 4 km, then turn right to Sommarövägen and continue about 1 km.

OPEN: Year-round, reservation preferably one week in advance.

PRICES: Cabin 50€/night, price includes one free dinner per person per visit. Visitors traveling without a car get a 5€ discount off the first night.
